Five new books that I like this week:
Funny/Humor:
About Your Father and Other Celebrities I Have Known: Ruminations and Revelations from a Desperate Mother to Her Dirty Son by Peggy Rowe, foreward by Mike Rowe
For those of you who don’t know me well, I love Mike Rowe. One of my favorite books last year was his October release, “The Way I Heard It.” His mother, who isn’t as famous but is just as witty, has just released her newest book, “About Your Father and Other Celebrities I Have Known.” This book is perfect for a good laugh and works for people who love celebrity stories, mommy humor, and zany family tales.
Self-Help:
The Wellness Remodel: A Guide to Rebooting How You Eat, Move, and Feed Your Soul by Christina Anstead and Cara Clark
I’m naturally skeptical of trends, fads, and anything with the name “wellness” and generally recommend that people proceed with caution with wellness books and products or promoted by a celebrity. I’m still making that recommendation and saying that you should always consult a qualified medical professional before trying any type of wellness plan. That being said, “The Wellness Remodel” offers an interesting take on personal wellness and using the way you care for your body to help you work through stressful times. And, boy, did Christina Anstead go through some stressful times. The lead author, Christina Anstead, is known to many as a co-host of the HGTV show “Flip or Flop” while Cara Clark is a nutritionist. But, she isn’t your nutritionist, so again: Consult a medical professional before following the advice in in this book.
Teens:
Kingdom Keepers: Disney After Dark by Ridley Pearson
“Kingdom Keepers” is a great book for middle-school aged kids who like Disney and thrillers. There’s fantasy and science thrown in for good measure. This is a fun tale about teens who try to thwart an evil plot to destroy Disney World.
Middle Grades:
Marvel Action: Black Panther: Rise Together (Book Two) by By Vita Ayala, Arianna Florean (Illustrator)
It’s the second book in the current Black Panther series. It’s geared towards middle grades (ages 8-12, give or take), but older comic book and Marvel Universe fans may enjoy it.
Audiobook:
Think Like a Rocket Scientist: Simple Strategies You Can Use to Make Giant Leaps in Work and Life by Ozan Varol
“Think Like a Scientist” is my audiobook pick of the week. It’s great in any format. As far as genre is concerned, I’d classify this as a self-improvement/business strategy/motivational book. Thinking differently is a solid piece of advice for personal growth and for doing better in business. This book offers techniques for how to think differently and in a very specific, analytic style. Ozan Varol, as a podcaster and law professor, is an engaging narrator and I stand by my general rule that self-help and business books are often better in an audio format.
Let me know what you think of this week’s new releases!
